Playground

20 years ago The Waynesville Kiwanis Club spearheaded construction of a wooden castle playground. Hundreds of community members came together to build the playground in a week’s time in the early 2000s.  It quickly became an iconic cornerstone of family recreation in Haywood County.

In 2020 a new playground addition was installed.  The new equipment provides endless hours of fun with cables, bars, obstacles and a myriad of climbing structures, along with new swings. This $50,000 playground project has being funded entirely by the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville.

On Thursday afternoon, October 1st, our Kiwanis Club dedicated a Kiosk at the playground in honor of Riley Howell,  During recent upgrades, workers found a wooden picket with Riley Howell’s name on it. His family had donated to the first playground when he was a little boy. Riley gave his life to save others when a shooter opened fire in his UNC Charlotte classroom. To honor Howell, the Kiwanis Club saved and placed that old wooden picket into the new kiosk.

We continue working on refurbishing and improving our playground. The current project is to have a Tot Playground, an area for the young children to play.
